I have to say, the start of this season has been a very interesting one, but not for the reasons you might expect. Although we're busier than ever, and business is up, it's actually more surprising to me how much work we've turned down. In fact, I feel like I've had more conversations lately with guys in the business about work they've turned down, than about work they've taken on.
This whole video came from a quick though I had over last week, when I sort've realized how many folks I've said no to in the last 2-3 weeks. Whether it's no on a last minute spring clean up, no on a lawn outside of a route that I am trying to be firm on, or no on special requests from customers, that are way beyond the scope of what we offer.
It all comes down to this: Saying No. And I mean a lot more than I ever have before. Here's why.
The more firm we are with how much valuable we bring to the table, the more we value ourselves. The more we respect ourselves and our new businesses, the more we sort've demand from the customer. In a way, when you start valuing your own time and energy, you start commanding better prices. You start commanding better opportunities. Thing/s start to change for the better.
I've just personally realized that over the last 12 months, I've had to reinvent my business self image. Who we are as a company, who we are as a business owner. We're not the same person or company we were 24 months ago, 12 months ago, even 6 months ago. Things change, people change. We've changed.
We didn't become more stuck up, more cocky, more entitled. None of that. Please hear me. What we finally did was start valuing ourself. Start valuing the time and energy and expertise we bring to the table. And that right there commands better prices, better work, more respect.
I feel at the end of the day, one big tip I could give you guys is, learn to say NO to folks. It's ok to walk away from work you don't want or need. Or work that doesn't pay what you believe you or it's worth. It's okay to turn down customers that offer jobs that you have no interest in.
It's okay to cancel customers because the price isn't right. It's okay to call a customer and let them know what the new price is. And if they cancel, or you cancel them so be it. Once in a while, I challenge you to cancel someone, just to make sure that you're' still in charge of your business, not the other way around.
I felt like over the last 24 months, my business and my customers were owning me, and not me owning the business. No more of that. This year we decided to put our foot down, take control, and make sure that we value our time and respect ourselves.
That's it! Hope you guys learn this lesson in your first year in business, and not in year 12 like I did. Hopefully this little fun video was helpful. Rock on!
